This is an insight practice and a pointing out instruction.

  • Begin with the whole body and find what feels steady. Let the body relax and the mind settle.
  • Bring forward a sense of trust in yourself, in the support you have, and the practice.
  • Notice each aspect of experience and put it to the side. You might picture setting each down beside you as you sit, letting everything be placed around you with you in the centre.
    • Notice the senses of hearing, seeing, and feeling body sensation. Let them be there, and put that whole field of sensation to one side.
    • Notice internal feeling – the felt sense of the body, any emotion. Let it be exactly as it is, and put it to one side, without feeding it.
    • Notice mental activity – thoughts as mental sound or mental images, including any narration about how the practice is going. Recognise it, and gently place it to one side.
    • Notice the sense of self – the subtle feeling of being you, here, meditating. That’s also sensation. Place it to one side too.
  • Notice what remains. There is still knowing, awareness, presence. It takes no effort. It is open, clear, still.
  • Rest as awareness. Whenever something arises, gently put it aside again.
  • Unhooking is less doing, not more. It’s like realising you’ve been making a fist and letting it open. The only effort is in noticing.
